I have this pair of pristine white high top Converse which were begging for a make over. So this weekend armed with a hot glue gun and around 200 Swarovski crystals (not including the ones I have lost under the sofa! 😋), I set to work. This was the result:
Sewing
My new sewing machine (it matches my purple hair)
Learn to Sew
I have just started my six-week ‘Learn to Sew’ course with Fashion Antidote in London. I haven’t used a sewing machine for years, but it was so easy to use once we got started.
I am looking forward to the rest of the course.
Crafts Are Killing My Street Cred
I have mentioned that I have got a bit of a craft obsession. It is killing my ‘street cred’ and if I was even considered a little bit cool…well that is gone now too.
The idea of little groups of grannies or women of the W.I. are far gone. We have a few men in our group, *young men* I might add, not old granddads. They are all trying their hand at learning what some might consider good life skills (I am not saying that Origami is a life skill!) . I have tried cross stitch, origami, making perfume and moisturiser. I have even managed to fit in the odd museum visit and craft show visits in London to get some inspiration for what I want to do next. I am a keen cook, love making puddings, baking and I knit. I am hoping to run some sessions with the group I co-organise here in London. It will be fun to pass on some of my skills to anyone wanting to learn.
I have always wanted to make my own clothes. I have kept my Janome sewing machine growing dust in a cupboard for a good few years. Originally, it seemed such a good idea to buy it. How embarrassing that I never even took it out of the box.
I am not an average shape and I struggle to find clothes that fit me well. I am like Joan from Mad Men but without the fabulous outfits! Surprisingly, I’m not overly girly, but I do dream of a wardrobe full of clothes that always look good and fit well.
When I was young, my mother would run up an outfit for the weekend and I would watch but never really pay attention to the amount of detail that went into it. Now, with a lot of help from other members of my group , I am going to start making some really simple outfits. With enough practice, I have been promised I could be good enough to attempt a Vogue vintage dress pattern. That is my big goal!
I would love to hear about any projects you are currently working on, or any ideas that you have for your hobby projects. Where do you get your inspiration for the things you make?
Have a great day!
